Having a laugh with tourists

Typical London tourists in front of Big Ben

I suppose not everyone living in one of the most traveled to cities in the world appreciates the influx of foreigners every summer. Over at Time Out London, Robin McKie begins with the numerous joys of taking advantage of tourists’ seemingly innocent ignorance:

One of the joys of living in London is confusing the city’s myriad visitors. The humourist Gerard Hoffnung originally conceived the idea, and the tradition has been nobly maintained in Time Out’s own ‘Lies to tell tourists’ series in Big Smoke. Consider this gem: ‘The city’s brothels are easily identified by the large blue lamps outside. Step inside and ask about prices.’

He then continues on to suggest that tourists are nothing but an annoyance, clog tube trains and should be subjected to a “tourist tax.”
